It’s Only a Movie ..
One of the country’s most revered and (sometimes) reviled film reviewers opens up about his life and love of film and, how sometimes, life is stranger than fiction.
Dr K’s life in film starts as a small boy growing up in sunny North Finchley and visiting his beloved Phoenix Cinema. Then moves onto his time winging it at (the now sadly defunct) City Limits and finally onto his now legendary slot on Radio 5 Live’s Mayo and Kermode Film Review. If you’ve not heard the show, well why not? Don’t worry; you can remedy that straight away by downloading the current podcast. Of course, finish reading this first.
The book is sprinkled with an assortment of great film anecdotes and Dr K’s musings on how Jason Isaacs would be great to play him in the film of his life managing to do this whilst still retaining his natural knack for self-effacement.
Moving on he proves that life is – indeed – stranger than fiction as he recounts an unbelievable encounter with Director Werner Hertzog in Los Angeles that really has to be re-read to be believed.
A great read no matter if you disagree with every review he’s ever written.
