Acceptance And How It Can Help You Feel More In Control

Have you grown tired of hearing phrases like ‘unprecedented’ and ‘new normal’? I think my favourite ‘least-favourite’ at the moment is ‘lessons will be learnt’. Don’t worry, I promise I won’t be using any of these phrases in this article, But, whichever phrase has you running to the dark cupboard under the stairs in despair, everyone can benefit from some emotional support currently.

Incidentally, thanks to those of you who contacted me to say that they found my previous articles ‘We can accept, but we don't need to tolerate’ and 'Great Expectations?' really helpful.

With the above in mind, I thought back to some work that I did with a client late last year around Control and Acceptance. During our sessions we worked through a number of practical exercises which I hope will bring a fresh insight for you and be a helpful tool for maintaining your emotional wellbeing during the current ‘events’.

Great Expectations?

Thank you to those of you who contacted me to say that they found my previous article ‘We can accept, but we don't need to tolerate’ really helpful.

The theme of that article segues neatly into an area I’ve recently been working with a client on; expectations. One of the things that makes us human is having expectations, a whole heap of them in fact, and these constantly touch and affect every part of our waking thoughts.

During one session it became clear that she had unconsciously set all these unspoken expectations for herself and was then using them as the metric to judge herself, her self worth and her actions. And whilst setting expectations is perfectly healthy, things can easily go awry if the expectations fall into either of these three categories
